
Opposition Nationalist Party (KMT) is claiming that its candidate, Ma Ying-jeou, has won more than half the vote in the island's presidential election on Saturday.
This comes amid television reports that Ma has stormed to with an unassailable lead 17-point lead in the vote count.
Local TV stations say that with more than 90 percent of votes have been counted; Ma has a massive lead over Frank Hsieh of the pro-independence ruling Democratic Progressive Party.
His victory will end eight years of DPP presidency under Chen Shui-bian, who is stepping down after the maximum two terms, and which was marked by recurring tensions with China over his pro-independence policies.
