What is the relevancy of Gerakan in Barisan Nasional?

Gerakan is a well-known Penang base political party especially during the era of Gerakan-led Penang government. When it started off as an opposition party, people did have very high hopes and expectations for them. But gone away are the golden days and the party is at its upmost challenging crossroads following the dismal results of the March 8, 2008 general election.

Gerakan is claimed to be dejected or demoralized. Practically, it was whitewashed only with just two parliamentary and four state seats captured. The dismal result showed a political scenario that Gerakan can’t remain its relevancy in Barisan Nasional. It is by far the most serious issue to be addressed if lack of urgency to stop the political decline.

It is a controversial claimed by the opposition that the instigation of racial animosities and scum racists had contributed to the collapse of confidence in BN and voted many of the racist out of office in the March election.

The questions arise, will Gerakan survive politically after suffering the major setback and what are the next political strategies? Will the scenario turn into a destabilizing and destructive force in the political system?

Looking for excuses and spinning the issues were the main strategy after its massive losses in the March 8 polls were the immediate remedies taken by Gerakan to stabilize the supporters and party members. Unexpectedly, it caused undermine and most critical internal challenge from the radical group of Penang UMNO.

The primary differences between these two political parties emerged after Gerakan suffering the massive setback in Penang. Viewed in this context, these negative political forces are identifying the consequences of losing state government power and causing the basic dividing line between Gerakan and UMNO.

Obviously the future of Gerakan is still uncertain and it could be well die a natural death. One of the most important questions emerging is none other than should Gerakan pull out from Barisan Nasional? There seem to be three possibilities for the variation in the ease or difficulty for the future of Gerakan although 60 percent of its members wanted to quit the coalition; Gerakan can continue to stay in the Barisan Nasional but to review its position in BN; withdrawal from the Barisan Nasional and become independent opposition party or joining Parti Keadilan Rakyat.

The political parties that seem to share common ground on many issues fail to agree each other especially the issue of ISA was claimed by some political analysis to be the root cause of the internal conflict in BN. The absences of “good faith bargaining” after the dismal general results seem that Gerakan lost his bargaining power and not entertained by UMNO. This is a big shame and embracement of the party which is simply unacceptable by Gerakan.

The simplest way of measuring this criterion is whether there exist any priori unwillingness to negotiate with a losing people’s mandate party which caused a complete absence of “deal-breaking” preconditions reflected by the radical group of Penang UMNO’s recent sentiments.

This would be a fairly simple determination of whether the partnership either agreed to or otherwise on the spirit of Barisan Nasional based upon their parties’ core values and current status.

It would seem the proposal of withdrawal from Barisan Nasional to become independent opposition party might be another alternative for Gerakan to strategize its political game plan. Should the role of watchdog and pressure group over both the BN and Pakatan Rakyat bring the reinvent of the party are the aspects to be considered.

The solution of leaving Barisan Nasional and joining the Pakatan Rakyat opposition alliance is another option for Gerakan. It did not surprise many people as it was something to be expected as the party had displayed such a tendency. But it just working like the two pedals of a bicycle that rotate the connecting chain and move the entire mechanism.

By and large, the political status and role play by joining Pakatan Rakyat to establish at least a potential coherent minimum-winning alliance seems need to be considered carefully by Gerakan. It is the responsibility of the political elite to bargain for a better consensus although Gerakan is very weak and lost much good faith bargaining now.

Can Gerakan be able to reinvent itself to springboard towards the possibility of recapturing power at the next general election through increasing more Malays and less Chinese members or otherwise?

In order to be heading in the right direction, Gerakan should be very wise about the mythical. Should it carve out a niche for itself, or it may well die a natural death.

Perak Gerakan wants party to quit BN

The spirit of the founding fathers of Malaysia must be heeded and understood by all Malaysian especially the politicians in power and otherwise.

Whoever leads Malaysia; they must appreciate and understand what has sustained this multi-racial country when it could have easily been destroyed.

Although Gerakan is considered the 4th largest party in BN but it governed the Island since 1969 prior to losing Penang at the March 8, 2008. The temporarily set back should be addressed positively and not otherwise.

Politically, the current Gerakan leaders ought to do the necessary to keep the party relevant to the people instead of pulling out from BN which is coalition for more than 30 years.

Ironically, the major races in Malaysia formed their political parties respectively as coalition and using racial and religious issues to garner support from their own race which became the characteristic norm of Malaysian politics.

The Perak Gerakan contemplating calling for the party to pull out from Barisan Nasional is by far for its own political mileage. By addressing that Gerakan is just playing a minor role in BN after the lost of the Penang state Government, there is nothing much left for Gerakan to stay on in BN is thus unjustified.

The suggestion by Tan Lian Hoe that the party should pull out from BN due to Umno's unabated and unabashed racial politics that had hurt the sentiments of non-Malays and non-Muslims is politically unjustified too.

As the Deputy Information Minister, MP for Gerik, and Gerakan Vice-President and Women’s Chief, she should be the last to voice out any suggestion publicly.

The suggestion is deem to put BN state chairperson Gerakan leader Dr Koh Tsu Koon in an embarrassing situation as currently he is heading the BN by-election machinery in Permatang Pauh.

Gerakan national women leader and Vice-president Tan Lian Hoe suggested that the party should pull out from BN due to Umno's unabated and unabashed racial politics that had hurt the sentiments of non-Malays and non-Muslims.

Speaking at the party's Perak annual delegates' conference in Ipoh today, she hammered Umno for not learning from the harsh lessons meted out by voters in the last March general election.

"Umno continues to play racial issues without being bothered about the feelings of others.

"The party leaders seem yet to comprehend that racial politics no longer have a place in our multiracial society.

"Malaysians have rejected it in the last general election," the deputy information minister told the delegates this morning.

PENANG NEW GOVERNMENT KILLS TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE

The appointment of former Gerakan deputy secretary-general Datuk Lee Kah Choon as a director of the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and chairman of the executive committee of InvestPenang, a PDC subsidiary, superficially can be justified by the effort of the state government to achieve a greater efficiency and effectiveness to make a positive contribution to the economic development of Penang.

Although PDC and InvestPenang were set up by the previous Barisan Nasional state government to draw investments to Penang and the new state government wants to chart a new course by appointing those who, going by tradition, would not get appointed, by appointing Datuk Lee Kah Choon, is a good justification and excuses, but in fact, it is one of the political games professionally planned and created.

I
t is truly unbelievable but very effective political strategy. The strategy is remarkable indeed as the political implication is great. The action not only serves as a blow and hurting to Gerakan but also indicated that the political game over for Datuk Lee Kah Choon. It is a strategy of killing two birds with one stone.

It got me thinking and I can’t see where and how to conclude to a point. Gerakan has to face it, honestly, under the circumstances and under the political pressure the party was facing, who would have done much better? Put you in Gerakan’s shoes in this moment and circumstances, seriously, what do Gerakan can do? Is it Gerakan can’t do anything?

Gerakan ought to do something, but the best things Gerakan can do are waiting and see, after all, wait and see is always the best policy, isn’t it? Honestly, I can’t wait to see upcoming practical political strategy.

IS KAH CHOON QUIT ALL GERAKAN POSTS JUSTIFY?

Is Gerakan deputy secretary-general Datuk Lee Kah Choon quit all party posts with immediate effect as to take responsible for the election losses and to pave the way for the party to “get back on its feet” justify?

Largely not, after all, he is not the party number one or two. Why should he quit? Because for the sake of the party or the criticisms in a Chinese daily that the party leadership should be responsible for the election losses? Wining or losing in politics is common. What is good for Lee is bad for the party, and vice versa. It’s important to see the responsible leader not in this manner.

If you asked the general public, could you imagine Lee taking this action toward the party or the BN justify? I think most people would have said no especially based on the criticisms in a Chinese daily. There is little sense that such an assessment and the political senario will change anytime soon. The paper seems to cross the line and the public should take into account allow that sort of political meddling for some private personal interest in what they see as a internal party affairs. Wasn’t the cause a good one? Isn’t it matter or otherwise?

Lee, 48, who joined Gerakan in 1987, resigned as Jalan Jelutong branch chairman, Jelutong division chairman, Penang Gerakan assistant secretary, state working committee member, central committee member and central working committee member.

Lee, a lawyer, said he would continue to serve the party as an ordinary member, especially in Jelutong and Machang Bubok. He defeated DAP’s Karpal Singh for the Jelutong parliamentary seat in 1999 and retained the seat in 2004. In the March 8 polls, he lost the Machang Bubok state seat to PKR’s Tan Hock Leong.
