Is Khoo Kay Kim skillfully manipulating Chinese educational issue?

There is a need for extra sensitivity when proposals are based upon education, race and religion in multiracial society.

Ironically, a society can be ripped apart by the unwise handling of sensitive issues and causes political instability and the fall of the regime.

Khoo Kay Kim

Academically, it is not wrong for Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Khoo Kay Kim to propose a restructure of the national education system to introduce a single stream system but the act can be seen as systematic usurpation of ultimate BN political power.

Undeniably, the calls for a single-stream school system would mean that vernacular schools would cease to exist and it will generate political turmoil or cause MCA especially UMNO to lose its grip on power.

Ironically, Chinese education issue is a sensitive issue of the Chinese. It remained a taboo subject since independence.

Historically, vernacular schools have existed for more than half a century and there are about 1,000 Chinese primary schools and about 500 Tamil schools in the country.

Politically, the vernacular school system in this country is an area that is extremely sensitive. Even MCA championing the cause of Chinese schools but it is claimed that due to ineffectiveness of handling the issues, the Chinese have lost confidence in MCA. Many Chinese have felt betrayed and taken advantage of by its leaders and it caused MCA lost in the general election.

Unfortunately, it is claimed that the opposition and academician have done everything they could to discredit MCA as well as BN. They know fully well that the proposal contradicted the spirit of the Federal Constitution, which guaranteed the freedom to promote and develop the vernacular school system.

In fact, it is often seen that many academician are anti-establishment and not surprisingly anti-establishment news and viewpoints can be regularly heard.

The consistency of their overt or covert anti-establishment viewpoints that can threaten the stability and usurpation of political power is most welcome by opposition.

While BN hope for popular support from the local population, what right do we have to help someone to usurpation ultimate political power of the BN government?

I believe that Tan Sri Prof Khoo Kay Kim is not just pointing out the flaws of the Chinese education, but rather to the nation's educational system as a whole. As he's a Chinese, he isn't foolish to discriminate the other races' educational issue.

Since the dawn of Malaysia's independence, Prof Khoo must have witnessed the erosion of the nation's educational system till this day. Why can't we learn from developed countries where their level of education promotes creativity. It's proven medically that children learn better through creativity rather than rely too much on memory muscle. This could be the reason why Prof Khoo stated that our education till this day are predominately producing "copy-cats" instead of "creative-cats".

As a concerned parent, I see my eldest child suffering as he doesn't enjoy school. He's pressured to memorise what he 'learns' (if I even categorise it as learning). Worse of all is that he can't even understand what he's been taught. That's because teachers nowadays are relying too much on building their students' memory, with little to no comprehensive capabilities. Children at his age should be learning through experiential learning, as kids are often curious and want to question, experiment and experience what they encounter.

I sincerely hope that Prof Khoo's statement will be a BIG wake up call for the Ministry of Education, to reverse or re-invent the education system immediately before it's too late.

From,
A Concerned Parent

Recent comment by Khoo Kay Kim that the races in Malaysia only mingle among themselves.Chinese mix among themselves,Indians mix among themselves and Malays among themselves.this scenario is the same in Singapore and Australia.it is natural for any race to be among themsleves. The chinese are well known to meet among themselves,be it malaysia, spore or australia.
the strong bind of ethnicity is there in different levels for different races.not wanting to share information, not letting others in to the group is a natural phenomenon and it is more pronounced in some races.

To Prof. Khoo, I strongly agreed to your ideas / proposal of having a single education stream. You did state closing down the Chinese / Tamil schools. Down south their education system kept improving had proven very effective. Malaysia already over 50 year’s independent but still we are lacking behind others countries in their education system (from primary std. to secondary). Are going forward or backward in the system, well I guess we going down on ward.
It is very truth MCA always championing the cause of Chinese school, why? They are worried once they lose grid of the systems they are gone for good. Why not, it for the good for the Chinese to progress further.
Down south when the government gives speeds in English the Chinese, Malay, Indian and guest listen and understand what the message is trying to convey. Back home as when the government gives speeds in BM only the Malays understand what the government trying to convey the message. We may say the non-Malay understand what the message in BM, only a handful got it in full, should I say the rest got it half-pass- six. There wasn’t much translation in the media, even so if there is, some missing part.
I have come across many Malaysian Chinese telling me the important and the needs to speak write mandarin. I ask why? It’s because of China they will be the next super power. I don’t agree to it, I am born in Malaysia and I am a Malaysian. My question to them are you migrating back to China, are you or your children going to China and work? China got a population of over one billion, they don’t need us anyway. Let said the Chinese from mainland comes to Malaysia, for what they are doing. Most of them come in doing massage / KTV / looking for sugar daddy.
Latterly, there even more well to do Malaysian are migrating off to foreign lands for better life, we should leave out the higher educated / profession people, thus some chooses not to return after finishing their studies aboard. Many reasons; political, education, ethnic, etc., the list goes on. We not are in surprise the Malays are not coming home after abroad studying. Companies in Malaysia don’t offer the type of jobs or the salaries scale not to their expectation.
I have not come across any aunties / uncle telling me they intend giving up their Malaysian citizenship going to China. Frankly speaking, the mainlands Chinese are the one trying to migrate out. I saw a documentation show in Singapore about China, this show tell how aggressive Chinese in China wants to learn English. Extensively the elderly also enroll themselves into English classes, learn to read and speak proper English. Writing only comes in the later back. The lecturers brought in from UK / USA and these lecturers speak basic mandarin.
Many time in the street of Malaysia or Singapore I came across main land Chinese they act, talk and very crude. Too bad they look very boorish, China born compliment to the Chinese not born in China or China national. Type ABC – American Born Chinese or Asian Born Chinese.
Learning English is not as when you are free or as when you need. Dear MCA, stop championing the Chinese all for the sake language do something noble for the Chinese learn English. If MCA persist to maintain Chinese classes, give free mandarin classes in the evening and at all your service centre.
