Sematan is a small
coastal fishing village located on a narrow western strip of Sarawak and is in
the Lundu Division.
Situated 107 km
northwest of Kuching, Sematan is an idyllic beach town and noted as the beginning
point for the Pan Borneo Highway which continues through the major towns of
Sarawak on its way north to Brunei and Sabah. It’s also a gateway to locations
around Southwest Sarawak.
Initially established
as a trading outpost, the small fishing village is sandwiched between the
Indonesian border and the South China Sea. It faces a beautiful bay lined with
a waterfront promenade and a long concrete pier juts out into the sea.
At northern end of
Sematan waterfront promenade are some stilt houses. The sandy beach is stretch
all the way to Tanjung Datu, the very tip of Sarawak.
Pulau Talang Kecil,
part of the Talang-Talang Satang National Park is located not too far off the
coast of Sematan.
