DAP CAN’T HEAD PERAK GOVERNMENT?

Although DAP won 18 seats, the most number of state seats within the Opposition in Perak but it is not likely for DAP to head Perak state government as the Perak constitutional stated that the candidate for Mentri Besar must be a Malay and profess the Muslim religion.

The new political crisis seems on the way. As DAP won 18 seats, PKR 7 and PAS 6, even both PKR and PAS seats combined together, they just only get 13 seats, far behind the total number of DAP seats. This will affect the functioning of the Perak new ruling coalition government.

In the fight for the Perak state assembly, DAP won all 18 of the seats in contested. PKR won seven and PAS took six, to make it 31 seats in total out of the 59 state seats available, winning with a simple majority to rule the state. BN won the remaining 28 seats.

The state constitution however has stated that the Menteri Besar post is only given to a Malay Muslim, effectively making DAP's non-eligible for the post.

However, there is a provision in the state constitution that allows the Perak Sultan to waive this requirement at his discretion.

Perak DAP chief Ngeh Koo Ham says:

“ ……This requirement could only be overruled “provided that his Royal Highness may in His discretion waive either or both of the requirements of this clause relating to race and the Muslim religion whenever he shall consider it expedient to do so”.

Representatives of DAP, PKR and PAS today sought an audience with the Regent of Perak to inform him that the coalition was ready to form a state government in Perak.

The meeting took place at the Raja Nazrin Shah’s official residence Istana Kinta at 4pm.

A list containing three potential Menteri Besar candidates - one each from the parties - were submitted to the Regent to be extended to the Sultan, who is presently away.

The leading candidates for the post is believed to be Perak DAP chief Ngeh Koo Ham, Pasir Panjang representative from PAS Mohamad Nizar Jamaludin and PKR’s Behrang state assembly person Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi.
